Introduction to Android Phones

Overview:

A Smartphone is a mobile phone that performs many of the functions of a computer, typically having a touchscreen interface, Internet access, and an operating system capable of running downloaded apps. 

Android is the name Google gives to the operating system that it makes and licences to many of the world’s manufacturers of smartphones and tablets.  The most common Android smartphones are Samsung, Acer, Sony and Kenko.

A tablet is a wireless touch screen personal computer that is smaller than a laptop but larger than a smartphone. Tablets are built with wireless Internet and a variety of software applications, Web browsers and games.  An Android tablet also uses the Android operating system which is made and licensed to many of the world’s manufacturers of tablets by Google.  The most common Android tablets are Samsung and Lenovo.

You will need:

•  A Google account.  If you already have a Google account bring the account Login Name and Password with you.
•  To be able to log into your device.
•  To bring your device to the learning session with its battery fully charged.  You should also bring the charging unit and cable.

Note:  If your device is brand new and you would like assistance to do an initial setup on your device, call/email North Wellington SeniorNet (northwellingtonseniornet@gmail.com) and we can arrange for a tutor to assist you with this before you come to this session.

Learning Objectives:  

The learning session will cover how to:
   •  Use the basic operations of your Smartphone or Tablet.
   •  Navigate around the variety of screen displays.
   •  Use the multi-touch screen.
   •  Use the virtual keyboard.
   •  Adjust Preferences (Settings).
   •  Set up WIFI and mobile data (mobile data on phones only).
   •  Use the Contacts App (phones only). 
   •  Make and receive phone calls (phones only). 
   •  Send and receive text messages (phones only).
